Lighting up the world, one smile at a time.

“I know we’re eating right now, but they have this condition called obstetric fistula. Because of it, these girls have become outcasts in society because of what they’ve been through. Their bodies just constantly leak and they smell bad so nobody wants to be around them.”

I could not believe what I was hearing. I could not believe that in the Congo, so many young girls were suffering because of the pain of war in a country filled with poverty. My heart sunk as I stared at my half-eaten quesadilla on my plate.

Anna continued her story. “Right now we are looking for people we can train to educate and help treat these girls. The thing is, most people who have adequate training want to leave the Congo. So they are thinking of training these girls who have had treatment and give them an opportunity to work and help others in their own country. I love it because it’s such a holistic way of meeting their needs.”

I grinned as I agreed with her and felt my heart start to fill with hope. I felt so many different emotions as she explained the work they were doing at Operation Smile.

It wasn’t just about cleft lip surgery — it was about bringing medical treatment anywhere and everywhere possible to treat these children in need. All starting with the hopes and dreams of a group of individuals with a heart to see children smile.

Working with Operation Smile is not for the faint of heart. Really, any compassion work is not for those with a weak spirit. In a world where so much tragedy exists, the work of a few who will labor for the chance to change one life is like a small candle in the night. Even one tiny flame is enough to pierce through the darkness.

Light enough candles and there is no telling what the world could look like.

This is why I want to be a part of the team at Operation Smile.
